A New Face At The Feeders

by admin - 16:21 on 24 March 2013

Now and again I've seen long-tailed tits lurking on the edge of the garden but they've never ventured close to our feeders – so today was a memorable one.

I was keeping an eye on the massed flocks of sparrows, chaffinches and assorted regular tits when the first one landed on the gatepost, as casual as any regular visitor. A moment later it was battling for space on the peanut feeder with a great tit and a blue tit.

After a few brisk comings and goings I realised that a second one was also keen to sample the peanuts. Neither stayed long but I was able to gather a small number of snaps, of which two stayed out of the delete bin.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that, now they've found the feeders, we'll see them more often – and that they stay clear of feline jaws.

The Fearless Ones have left garden wildlife alone today. To make sure they were too tired to bother small game, Matchgirl and I braved an icy wind to take them for a woodland walk this afternoon accompanied by a startlingly energetic Maia. All three moggies seemed to enjoy their ramble.

The outing served a double purpose, for Matchgirl's suffered from a troublesome hip since completing the Inverness half marathon last Sunday – we hoped that some gentle exercise would ease its stiffness. Internet browsing has filled her head with the fear of a stress fracture (two months on crutches to aid recovery) and another missed opportunity in London, so she's not a happy girl at the moment.

Tomorrow she hopes to get an emergency appointment with Adam, her running guru. Positive vibes and good wishes may help too. Please send her as many as you can.
