And Then There Were Two

by Russell Turner - 21:37 on 06 September 2018

No, not the band. The four-strong group which planned to run t’Yorkshire Marathon, already depleted by the loss of Matchgirl, has lost another member. An ankle injury means UltraPaul won’t be fit in time for the big day, less than six weeks away, leaving only me and Triathlon Cathy on the start line at York. Will we both make it? Time will tell.

My latest long run, today (only two to go!) was a mixed success. The good news was that my plan to run two miles then walk for 2-3 minutes worked well: my pace was acceptable (to me) and my average heart rate remarkably low after 10 miles. The bad news was that I returned to The Rural Retreat after 10 miles.

The schedule had me running for 2:30 or 14-16 miles, but after nine I was hit by heavy rain and bitter wind blowing in off the firth. I might have managed either; both together, while clad in just a T-shirt, was risking hypothermia. The tenth mile brought me within sight of two hours and home so I made the sensible decision.

However, I ran a further 45 minutes in the afternoon, in a heavier long-sleeved shirt, and added another 3.5 miles to the total. The rain held off. I could have made it all the way to four (and beyond) but that seemed enough. Next week is three hours and 16-18 miles. I’ll settle for 16, and 18 in my final long run. Weather permitting.
