High Anxiety

by admin - 13:06 on 24 September 2013

Walking with cats who think they're still kittens can provide some heart-stopping moments, especially when one of the cats is Willow.

Today, during our regular stroll up the lane, The Fearless Ones made their usual sortie over the wall and into the tangle of grass, bushes and trees beyond it. What was unusual was The Grey Streak's impression of a squirrel as she climbed a huge tree trunk that forked at least ten feet from the ground. The Tabby Terror followed but bottled out three-quarters of the way up and dropped back to earth where she pretended she was not interested in climbing anyway.

Willow enjoyed the view for some time, and even considered climbing higher until what little sense she has prevailed. It was only when she decided that she'd had enough, and began looking for a branch to descend, that a slight expression of concern was visible in her body language. For branches were there none.

I was much more concerned, fearful of what the small steeplejack would do if left alone while I fetched a ladder, and what Matchgirl would say if a parachuteless leap was attempted.

Fortunately, Willow was able to descend the first quarter of the way, head down and claws at full stretch, then leap the rest of the way, just as Pandora had done, and land unharmed. Cats don't care how much anguish they cause.

Maia Update: Our black cat seems almost fully recovered from her mystery ailment. I think she just wanted another car trip.

Restoration Update: My clean-up and printing of a tattered old postcard met with enthusiastic approval from its owner. If anyone else wants an old snap brought back from the dead, contact me. My rates are surprisingly modest.
