The Wonder Of Photoshop

by admin - 16:23 on 22 September 2013

Some snappers, especially those from The Old School (who should really be using glass plates, magnesium flash powder and huge wooden tripods), don't have a lot of time for Photoshop and its imitators. They consider post-production to be cheating, despite the fact that the Victorians did it. I think what they really object to is that it can make the work too easy.

I have some sympathy with their views (only some), and try to use the Mac sparingly, but there are occasions when Photoshop comes into its own.

Yesterday I was given a tattered 1919 postcard by a friend with the request that I scan it, clean it up and produce a shiny new print. I'd not tried this before, so I was happy to have a go. Much cloning, healing and spot healing later I'd produced an image with far fewer blemishes and a chance of looking decent when it's printed out.

Before and after

I'll try that tomorrow. Fingers crossed. In the meantime, as Matchgirl today escaped to Shetland I've been left to nursemaid an ailing moggy on my own; Maia must be feeling sorry for herself because she's lost all interest in food.

A trip to Dr Death's will be called for if her appetite's not returned by tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed about that too.
