Rodents And Reds

by admin - 21:00 on 22 February 2013

The New Rodent Holocaust continues to gather pace. Yesterday, a shrew became Pandora's latest victim.

Word of the blood-crazed kitten must be spreading because martens and deer were conspicuous by their absence from the garden last night. Or perhaps they stayed at home to avoid a plummeting temperature which was still six below zero when I left The Rural Retreat to meet Squirrel James and his stunt squirrels.

More training may be necessary, for we spent more than an hour in his hand-built hide before the first red rover arrived.

It's fortunate that, despite the Arctic elements, the light was too harsh and the background too bright for decent snappery because the focus in most of my snaps was less than perfect. I blame the bean bag I was given to support the Pentax – a cunning ploy by Squirrel James to ensure I didn't get better snaps than him.

Only two survived quality control, and neither are spectacular, but I can't complain after a morning spent watching cute rodents caper around the forest. Pandora would be delighted to meet them...

Excuses, excuses, excuses.....
