An Overlooked Friend

by admin - 20:07 on 15 August 2012

Pine martens have not featured heavily in these pages for a while, partly because we've had other things on our mind but mainly because, as has happened in the past three years, when August begins we see them only at dusk and after dark – neither of which offer much in the way of snappery opportunities.

So yesterday evening we had an unexpected treat when Young Marten came for supper before nine o'clock and stayed for almost fifteen minutes.

She'd visited at a similar time a couple of nights ago but left disappointed because I've been putting out nuts and Nutella around nine. I learned from my mistake; the garden gate was covered in goodies when she arrived.

The light wasn't brilliant – even at ISO 800 the shutter speed was slow. However, I had a remote release connected so I could click the button without shaking the Pentax, which always helps, and captured what may be the last daylight snaps this year.

So enjoy these. You'll find a few more on my Flickr page.

I dropped into the RSPB's new hide at Udale today to check out the facilities, which are impressive. Half-a-dozen species could be observed in the bay but the most memorable sighting was of occasional Black Isle resident Penelope Keith with husband and friends, all equipped with binoculars and intent on the birdlife. I resisted the temptation to autograph-hunt.

She is, I can reveal, friendly and a big fan of herons.

Book Update: A Cat Called Tess is now on sale at Fortrose Post Office. And the Ross-shire Journal has put her story on its website. Gone but definitely not forgotten.
