Life Goes On

by admin - 16:53 on 04 August 2012

It's less than a week since Tess died yet it feels like we've been without her for a month. Who can explain that?

Her absence is most obvious in the mornings, which are now strangely quiet. I still half-expect to hear an impatient yowl in the kitchen, or the sound of paws on the stairs, but there's nothing. Maybe her ghost has still to find her way home.

The first of her books have been sold and review copies sent to the leading cat magazines – Your Cat, Cat World and The Cat – so with luck many more will be despatched soon. I could have given away more review copies but the line has to be drawn somewhere – Tess would not be happy to appear in the pages of Total Cat or Cat Fancy.

I never heard back from Cats Protection in Inverness but there's a chance that Tess could become a star in Orkney: one of her German fans has sent a copy to a friend who's a member of the CP Stromness group and lives just doors away from the daughter of a friend of mine in Invergordon. It's a small world.

I've had little enthusiasm for snappery this week. Martens have been along most nights but always around 10pm when the light has gone. I'll get back to it soon. There is one snap I'd love to show you, a rear view of Tess and Matchgirl walking side-by-side down the lane in a perfect pastoral scene, but I've been forbidden because “my bum's too big”.

It isn't, of course, but there's no convincing her.

If you're not a follower of Matchgirl's running blog (which you should be) click here to read her tribute to our moggy. It deserves a wide audience.
