Strictly For The Birds

The gradual evolution of The Rural Retreat's garden has caused no problems for wildlife – in one area it's been welcomed with open wings.

One of my tasks has been the dismantling and levelling of what we believe was an overgrown rockery behind the apple tree. The finished work was so successful that last week the lawnmower could pass across its site without a bump. All that remained to do was apply grass seed and watch the circle of raked earth become part of the lawn.

But the tree sparrows had other ideas. The area has been claimed as an Olympic-sized dust bath.

At one point this afternoon, six or seven extremely happy sparrows could be seen enjoying the facilities: burrowing and flinging around the very dry earth with the joyous abandon of elephants at a watering hole. It would be a shame to deprive them of such innocent pleasure so I'll save myself the cost of grass seed and leave them to it.

If they're lucky they might find a liquid bird bath added to the avian spa. Visitors to the Retreat will always be spoiled.
