A Marten In The Morning

by admin - 21:07 on 04 May 2012

Life is noisy when you're a young pine marten on the lookout for a daytime snack. Everywhere you go you're accompanied by the sound of outraged birdlife. The surprise was that we heard the commotion at 8.50 this morning.

The visitor was the same marten we saw last Saturday, again in search of Nutella and peanut butter and again being mobbed by a blackbird. There must be a nest nearby. All the other birds were in a tizz too and not scared to complain loudly about the mustelid marauder.

She (Tim believes she's a she, and I agree) was driven from the top of the gate by the blackbird, then scared off again when she saw us peering at her through the living room window. Martens aren't easily deterred and moments later she was again atop the gate. This time she left of her own accord, disappointed by the lack of Nutella. The action lasted barely a minute so there was no chance of snappery.

A little earlier she was captured in The Nutella Tree by the Bushnell, in full colour, but after raising the quality bar so high last weekend I'm unwilling to share even the best of the snaps. However, marten fans can enjoy a fine portrait – one of last Saturday's three – when it's offered for sale for the first time at tomorrow's Dingwall craft fair.

First come, first served.

That's one hungry marten. Maybe she is the new Mrs Marten and has had kits or is about to have kits? All very exciting.

BTW, TIM thinks Mickey Mouse, Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are real so I'd pay little attention to anything he says.
