Marathon Matchgirl Changes Plan

by admin - 19:50 on 18 March 2012

Readers of Matchgirl's marathon blog will already know today's bad news – her athletic dream is over.

But only for this year.

The Back-up Team believe she could complete the course in April, but Matchgirl is determined to post a respectable finish time. Her present state of hamstring health makes this unlikely.

So she's taken advantage of the opportunity to defer her place until next year's race. In the meantime she'll ease her way back to full fitness before running the Elgin half marathon in September then embarking on a full marathon-preparation schedule, to climax in London in April, 2013. She's ruled out a place in January's Bermuda Marathon, much to my dismay. Some people are so selfish.

This has been a difficult decision for The Competitive One, involving tears and fears of impending old age. However, all could turn out for the best: four hours thirty minutes is the new target – at least half an hour shorter than her projected finish time this year.

And there's a bonus. Our London weekend will still take place so The Cultural One has begun to plan an exhaustive (and probably exhausting) itinerary of museums, theatre, sightseeing and fine dining. It could be tough.

Wildlife Update: Hedgehogs dashing around the garden are now being snapped every night by the Bushnell. Last night one grazed happily (but blurrily) just feet from Mrs Marten, who the last three nights we've had the pleasure of watching on the gate. Spring is here.
