The Mystery of the Moggy Malady

by admin - 17:16 on 11 February 2012

An anxious Matchgirl returned from a morning stroll today with Bess in her arms and tales of collapse, shaking and inability to move, which the moggy immediately confounded by walking to her basket.

Hypochondria is Matchgirl's middle name, but on this occasion it was clear that something was amiss with a puss who earlier in the morning had happily climbed trees, charged at birds and flung around sticks in a burst of energy at odds with her usual sedentary nature.

(I'll state now, for readers fearful of gloomy revelations, that Bess appears to have recovered from her mystery affliction.)

All had been well during their walk in the woods until her unexpected collapse and an air of dazed confusion which followed.

Seizure, stroke, epilepsy, hip-dislocation and diabetes (Bess has always been a big drinker of water) were all considered by Matchgirl before Dr Death's Dingwall surgery was consulted by phone. No emergency treatment was thought necessary for a cat now taking turns at snoozing and washing but an appointment was made for an examination on Monday. Blood will be tested. Poor puss.

I left them later in the morning to participate in Cromarty market (sadly, with the usual modest return) and came home to find them at large in the garden where Bess had been climbing the willow tree, seemingly as good as new. Very strange. We await the vet's examination with concerned interest.

Bess's basket, ignored for more than a year in favour of our sofa, has in the last couple of weeks become her new favourite place; whether there's a connection I couldn't say.

At The Water Hole

Permanently thirsty Bess out and about last year – she has as much difficulty passing a puddle as Matchgirl has passing a mirror.

Band Update: Thursday evening's Strawdogs recording session was a qualified success. When Mr Sound Engineer has selected the least worst takes, and buried the duff notes in the mix, we could have four or five tracks to choose from for our new demo CD. Fame must be just around the corner.

Marathon Update: Matchgirl set out on her first 13-mile run yesterday after finding every excuse possible why she wouldn't complete it. She returned, two-and-a-half hours later, having covered 14 miles. What a star.
