The Easy Option

by admin - 23:24 on 12 September 2011

Panicky texts from Matchgirl, seeking updates and reassurance about the state of the weather around The Rural Retreat, beeped into my phone at regular intervals during the day.

She needn't have worried. The garden remains free of puddles, all our trees survive and the roof is intact. Either we've been lucky or our part of the Black Isle is blessed.

The greatest excitement today was the reappearance of one of the mice (or the first sighting of a third individual) early this evening. Bess, alerted by my interest, gave chase but failed miserably in her efforts to catch the intruder; as did I, although my intention was to put the visitor outdoors rather than eat it.

Pixie (or Dixie, or possibly Jerry) was last seen disappearing into the tiny space beneath the chest on which the Retreat's television stands. Our moggy prowled around until a comfortable sofa became of more interest.

An easy life is always the easy option.
