Ravenous Beasts

by admin - 20:52 on 27 March 2011

British Summer Time began this morning for everyone except Bess, The Rural Retreat's resident moggy, who moved her clock forward several weeks ago.

Being synchronised again will be a great relief for the Retreat's human occupants: now we'll be woken by the yowling of a ravenous beast at seven, instead of six.

I visited the lair of other ravenous beasts this morning when Marten James introduced me to the tasks I'll undertake at his secret pine marten hide while he and Gill honeymoon in Borneo. This involves keeping the martens well fed and inspecting the hidden camera that records their dining habits and the time of their visits.

Inspired by his industry, I've made a small change to the Retreat's marten eating area in preparation for light nights and snappery. The gate has been pushed back, away from the window, and two caches of honey-topped nuts, one of them with bonus egg and Nutella, hidden behind the now grass-crowned seed volcano and a nearby mossy boulder. The theory is that this will allow me to take snaps that display less evidence of man.

I'll still make use of The Nutella Tree and the windowsill, however. I don't want to confuse my visitors too much.
