Blue Tit 8

Sleep was hard to come by last night in The Rural Retreat. I blame the wine. Or eating late.

Whatever, at 1.30am I left my bed for an hour's reading downstairs; Matchgirl did the same a while after I returned – which is how she was able to watch the live action Tom and Jerry cartoon which took place early in the morning.

The world's boldest mouse appeared from beneath the stairs, took a biscuit from Bess's dish and scurried away. Then it did it again. And again.

Greenfinch 5

Bess watched first in puzzlement, then disbelief, I'm told, before edging closer to get a better look at the hungry rodent who showed complete unconcern, even when the unwilling dinner donor was less than a couple of feet away.

This bravery was too much for Bess, who must have suspected that the mouse had a secret anti-moggy weapon hidden close at hand, for she returned to Matchgirl's comforting proximity and left the intruder to carry on with its brazen thievery.

Greenfinch 6

It's no wonder that Romeo can push her around at will.

Erratic slumber meant little was done today, although – to our surprise – we did begin to tidy the garden; even a wildlife reserve needs a small amount of tending.

And some bird snappery took place this morning. Only blurry in-flight sparrows were captured today so my newest snaps all feature birds at rest, including a typically grumpy greenfinch. Maybe he didn't get any sleep either.
