Shopping, Dripping, Taunting and Sneaking

by admin - 23:49 on 30 December 2010

Life's been quiet since Christmas, as you may have guessed by the recent lack of blog activity, so today's trip to Tesco to pick up a few necessities we forgot to buy there yesterday was not much fun.

Yesterday the place was packed, so I'd expected it to be quieter today. Big mistake. Every aisle was clogged up by fully laden jumbo-sized trollies pushed by ambling consumers who appeared not to have shopped for a month. The remaining space was occupied by guys staggering under the weight of cut-price booze multi-packs.

It was good to get back to The Rural Retreat, even though the decrepit plumbing continues to cause concern. Today, mere days after one ancient bath tap was rescued from the brink of obsolescence by Mr Fixit's magic spanner, its partner began to crumble. With luck we'll control the flow until Monday, when he returns; otherwise, it's back to ferreting behind the bookcase again to reach the stopcock twice a day.

One snippet of good news is that the ice has almost gone from the garden. Bess is making use of her cat-flap again and catching up on exercise in the willow tree where she's taunted by the blue tits who stay just beyond her reach while tempting her on to increasingly rickety branches, much to Matchgirl's alarm. Blue tits have a cruel sense of fun.

The milder weather might also bring an opportunity to renew acquaintance with Master Marten, who for most of December has not taken supper before midnight, when Matchgirl and I are tucked up in bed. Tonight he sneaked in before 10pm, as revealed by the sudden lack of egg.

Or maybe he's responding to the lengthening days. Not long now until spring.
