Cold Comfort

by admin - 20:38 on 10 December 2010

The day got off to a poor start when a loud 'pop' issued from inside the box of tricks that controls the shower and hot water turned to cold. I tried the old computer trick (turn it off and turn it on again, as recommended by all IT professionals everywhere) but to no avail.

In most households this would be no more than an inconvenience; in The Rural Retreat, where the rustic Rayburn and aged immersion heater combine to produce no more than a sinkful of hot water, our deprivation will be great.

The neighbourhood bathroom expert was too busy to answer his phone, doubtless out replacing some of the many burst pipes discovered on the Black Isle since the thaw began, but he was home in the evening.

His diagnosis, after I'd described the shower's symptoms, was uncompromising: "It's knackered."

He could have paid a house call on Monday, but as a special favour to the Chief Gnome's assistant I'd previously agreed to work that day. That's my reward for being helpful. So it will be Thursday before Mr Fixit can visit. In the meantime he'll look for a unit that can replace the dead one without needing pipe or electrical work. Fingers crossed.

Matchgirl has chosen a good time to be absent. She returns to Shetland on Sunday (weather permitting) where she'll be able to enjoy abundant hot water in her hotel room. I'll have to make do with a trickle from the bath tap.
