A Garden Alliance

by admin - 19:34 on 31 October 2010

Bess is clearly a bit of a strategist on the quiet, for she understands the Arabic maxim that “My enemy's enemy is my friend”.

The enemy, of course, is Romeo, the neighbourhood bully, who was seen recently attempting to molest Mr Pheasant. So it was no surprise today to see Bess and Mr P co-existing in cautious neutrality among the leaves that carpet the lawn of The Rural Retreat.

Our moggy had found herself a comfy spot beneath a tree when Mr P wandered into the garden that's become part of his territory and proved his masculinity by shouting loudly and pecking at the ground a few feet away from her – although not near enough for me to get a good snap.

Competitive Cool

Bess played it cool, refusing to move or even look at him for most of the stand-off (or, in her case, the sit-off), but after a while they accepted each other: she went back to sleep and Mr P ambled to the bottom of the garden where he disappeared.

Her outdoor alliance established, the feline diplomat spent the rest of the day dozing on her shelf above the radiator. It's a hard life.
