An Interrupted Supper

by admin - 23:11 on 30 June 2010

Bess regained some ground tonight in the competitive cool stakes, but as she was oblivious to her success it may not count.

Miss Marten, who I presume was responsible for clearing all the buttercup patch treats overnight (with the exception of an opened egg that had been there for three days – martens are as aware of salmonella as the rest of us), arrived to dine tonight at 8.30.

The light wasn't bad, so this was an opportunity for some decent snaps and to discover if pine martens like old parmesan cheese found at the back of the fridge.

She was just getting down to business on top of the gate, and I was finding the best settings for the Pentax, when Bess sauntered through the gateway and passed below her, unaware of the visitor's proximity.

Immobile cats are of no concern to martens, as was proved two nights ago, but a moggy on the march would appear to be a different matter. Miss Marten left her meal barely started and me with only one barely decent snap. Very frustrating.

Perhaps today's coolest customer was Spider, who spent much of the evening curled up on the rocking chair. She's obviously taken advice on how a proper cottage cat behaves.
