A Mystery at the Roadside

by admin - 21:38 on 22 June 2010

There might be another exciting wild mammal to be snapped in the environs of The Rural Retreat. (A mile away, to be honest.) Or possibly not.

In the last couple of weeks a feline form has been seen several times, by both Matchgirl and me, loitering along a roadside verge. We hope it's a wildcat.

The mystery creature is tabby, bulky and has the short, fat tail of a wildcat, but neither of us has got a proper look at its face. Although the chances are that it's someone's moggy out on the prowl, you never know. We'll stay alert.

No martens have been seen since yesterday's hurried departure, but overnight someone made the most of what was on offer – everything edible was gone this morning, including the egg. All that remained was a clean shell.

Miss Marten clearly likes to keep things tidy.

I saw this cat this morning just about 8am. It crossed the road left to right (heading west) just before the junction.

Any thoughts on what it is?

A cat?
