Matchgirl's come up with another theory to explain Romeo's devotion to The Rural Retreat's resident rodent exterminator – she's his mother substitute.

As previously mentioned, the black-and-white interloper, despite his size, is still more of a kitten than a cat. Matchgirl believes that he's missing his mum.

This would explain why he follows her around and imitates her – he's learning to be a real moggy.

What he's having most difficulty learning is boundaries. That's why Bess gave him a full-blooded hiss today when his desire for attention became too irksome. He learned for ten minutes.

Bess continues to take great care that Romeo doesn't sneak into her home territory, as this snap of her on guard close to her cat-flap illustrates. Nothing gets past Bess.
