Rambling Around Redcastle

by admin - 19:47 on 02 April 2010

The Highlands received its deserved reward today after the sleet, rain and blizzards we suffered earlier in the week – a day of sun and a cloudless blue sky.

Which was handy, as this was the day set aside for photographic purposes. So it was a shame that Dolphin James was called away to deal with a family drama before we'd even begun, especially as he was the one who knew the alleged whereabouts of the alleged squirrels to be found at Redcastle, along the coast from North Kessock on the Beauly Firth.

Andrew (the third happy snapper) and I made the best of it by exploring the land around the dilapidated Redcastle mansion, a building hundreds of years old that's been allowed to decay since World War II. What a waste.

We wandered around for a couple of hours and saw only two other people and a dog. On a bank holiday Friday. It doesn't have to be traffic jams on the way to the seaside.

This early in the year, and at the end of a hard winter, there wasn't much floral excitement, so after we'd grown tired of snapping architecture we made do with a fine cluster of pussy willow.

The only down side of the day (James may have other ideas) was dropping my specs somewhere while tramping through the undergrowth. As I never replaced the pair that was purloined by shifty Italian tourists in Namibia, that's why I'll watch Ashes To Ashes tonight through prescription sunglasses.
