It Could Be You

The radio news left Matchgirl in a tizz – someone in the Inverness area won the lottery six months ago but had failed to collect their cash. And there was only half an hour left to make a claim.

Her reaction was immediate panic, although the source of her concern was a mystery.

When Matchgirl indulges in a lotto fling it's done online, where winners are informed automatically, so there's no way she could be the careless winner, but hope springs eternal. Her online account was scrutinised to ensure that a £3.6m deposit hadn't slipped her notice, and her diary checked to jog her memory about where she'd been when the lucky ticket was sold.

All to no avail.

The deadline has now passed with no claim. This suggests that the holder of a ticket for the September 23 draw with numbers 23, 25, 28, 41, 46 and 47 is dead, in a coma or no longer in the country.

Unless it's you.

Curious

Mr Marten, as snapped last year – will we see him again soon?

Pine Marten Update: Now that spring is here, and the nights drawing out, hopes of photographing our invisible visitor are rising. For that reason, yesterday the bird feeders were moved to the apple tree and sweet enticements smeared on The Nutella Tree for the first time in six months to supplement those on the gate, where he enjoys his nightly snack.

This morning, the gate was licked clean but the tree was untouched – either he's lost the habit of looking there or the stealthy visitor isn't Mr Marten and doesn't know to check.
