A Gift from the Tax Gods

by admin - 19:56 on 19 March 2010

One of the benefits of being self-employed is that The Tax Man keeps a fatherly eye on us, ready with help and good advice.

Yesterday he wrote to us, separately, to confirm that he'd received all our tax payments for 2008-09 and that, in my case, I had nothing more to pay. Which was good of him.

Matchgirl was more perturbed by her correspondence, for our kind-hearted friend in the Inland Revenue's East Kilbride bunker wants to give her some money back. The ace Black Isle businesswoman, who's incapable of making a mistake in her tax return, was certain there'd been an error at his end.

“Should I phone to tell them they've got it wrong?” she mused, overwhelmed by the unexpected government largesse. “I did my return online so there's no way I could have overpaid. What if I spend it then they want it back?”

After a small amount of debate I was able to convince her that The Tax Man doesn't make mistakes like that – she'd just have to accept the money.

She was still not entirely convinced, but came up with a cunning plan to ensure that if he did demand the return of the cheque it would be too late. Her windfall will be converted into shoes at the earliest opportunity.
