Taunted By The Gods

The Weather Gods and Running Gods must have it in for me. Since the (too) hot and sunny Tomatin 10k in May, all but two of my races have featured interesting weather on the day itself or the journey there or back.
The meteorological mayhem began later in May, in Edinburgh, where the marathon was blessed with rain, hail and gales. A month later, the Leeds 10k enjoyed a decent day but more rain and gales marred the drive there. It was the same for the York 10k in August, except this time it was the drive home that suffered from unseasonal precipitation.
I had some respite a week later at the Deveron 10k, then two more rain-affected 10ks at Killen and Stirling. Surely I was due some good racing weather? No. After a calm, dry and relatively comfortable Ness 10k last weekend, the Gods decided to really punish this weekend’s runners. Hence today’s wind- and rain-battered journey from The Rural Retreat to the Redesdale Arms near Otterburn in Northumberland (wind gusting to 61mph, standing water, bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Edinburgh bypass) and more of the same forecast tomorrow for the rest of the trip to Lincoln. So much for the pleasant sight-seeing dawdle I’d had in mind.
The only good news is that half marathon day is forecast to be dry, although wind gusting up to 37mph might be testing.
By the law of averages, I must be due decent conditions for the Yorkshire 10 Mile in a couple of weeks, or the Jedburgh 10k the week after (I’ve made the decision). Or maybe the snow will come early this year. Anything’s possible when you’re running.
