Preparing For The Storm

by Russell Turner - 16:03 on 23 January 2025

Week 3 of marathon training has ended a day earlier than it should, with only four runs, because tomorrow we head south for our annual Strictly Live fix. Or we might not. Red and amber wind, snow and rain warnings suggest the drive down might not be fun, and when (if) we get to Glasgow there’s always a chance that the event might not go ahead. Power might be off, the venue flooded or performers unable to reach the Hydro. Some Glasgow restaurants will close for the day, as will all schools and some entertainment venues.

We’ll make a decision tonight, even if it means writing off what we’ve paid for a hotel (can’t be changed) and tickets (unless we’re able to resell them). We were 50/50 yesterday; today the odds are 60/40 against. What a nuisance, but better than possibly being featured on the news as one of the idiots who’ll end up off the road or under a tree or a truck after police have advised against travel.

Long run day would have been tomorrow; instead, I ran/walked the required 1:45 today, covering a modest 9.39 miles but finishing comfortably and knowing I could have gone further despite a sometimes chill breeze. The 11:11min/mile pace would complete a marathon in under five hours, which is my target, so I can’t complain.

The weather should have calmed down by next weekend when I run the X-Border 10k from Carlisle to Gretna. The Met Office doesn’t forecast that far ahead; the BBC, which gets its info from MeteoGroup, is bolder, offering a two-week prediction. Currently it shows light rain, 7ºC and a moderate breeze. As it’s from the south, meaning I’ll have a tailwind all the way, I can live with that.

I would sit tight if I were you. Haven't seen winds like this since I was stationed in the Antarctic. There is always something loose that becomes a deadly missile.
