Stepping Up The Distance

by Russell Turner - 22:23 on 17 May 2022

Training for not running the Edinburgh Marathon (now a mere 12 days away) continues. Highlights included almost two miles walked last Saturday while mowing the lawn and, the following day, the first 10k since London Landmarks.

The 10k, it must be admitted, was tough considering it took 64mins for a distance I’ve covered in 52, but as my training remains unstructured it’s not surprising. Fortunately, a five-mile run/walk today produced almost identical pace yet was much more comfortable; afterwards, my feet hardly complained at all. Let’s hope they don’t have a relapse.

With 17 days gone, my ROWED May streak remains unbroken, helped by getting yesterday’s walk out of the way before the downpour which broke a welcome spell of very warm weather. Welcomed by me, at least – the sun returned today, much to the displeasure of Matchgirl who was also on the run this morning. She’s hoping for low temperatures and light rain for her Edinburgh effort. It takes all sorts.

As for me, my plan is for a 10-mile run/walk on Sunday (or, more likely, Monday as the band has another two-gig weekend in the offing), after which I’ll make a final decision on whether to attempt the marathon. I suspect, unless the weather forecast is perfect (for me), that I’ll spare my feet the trauma and allow them to begin London Marathon training next month fresh and rested. I’ve decided to revert to the tried-and-tested plan I’ve used in the past, rather than the more challenging Runners’ World sub-4:30 schedule, although I still hope to beat that time, more likely in York than London.

Heating Update: After five days without heat or hot water, the cause turned out to be not a damaged control unit but a blown 3 amp fuse forgotten about in the back of the wardrobe that used to house the immersion heater. The unit is now protected from unhygienic cats by a plastic takeaway tray. It may not have style but it does the job.

Saw your lawn mowing effort on Garmin, and was very impressed :-)

There would have been more if I'd bothered to get the strimmer out too!
