Three Days To Go

by Russell Turner - 20:30 on 31 March 2022

That’s March almost over and a mere 26 miles run – the lowest monthly total since the very early days of my athletic career. To counter that, I’ve walked 31 miles and earned a Garmin badge to prove it. I’ll find out on Sunday whether that will be enough to prepare me for a half marathon.

Packing has begun ahead of tomorrow’s flight to London. My running gear – which covers all climatic eventualities – fills the teeny under-seat bag permitted by easyJet. Fortunately, because I paid for the extra legroom seats, I can also carry on an overhead locker bag; with no hold luggage, Matchgirl and I will be able to make a swift departure come touchdown in Gatwick.

With just three days until London Landmarks, maranoia has kicked in – not helped by Facebook sharing more tales of medical despair – and every cough or sneeze I expel sparks fears of a cold or Covid. 25,000 runners had signed up for last weekend’s Cardiff Half Marathon; 12,000 turned up. That’s according to a Facebook post, and you can always rely on the interweb for facts.

Better news involves my fundraising, now at 90% of the target set by Breast Cancer Now when it gave me my charity place. Just another £32 to find then that’s one less thing to worry about. If you’d like to nudge me closer to £350 you can do so here.

The dodgy ankle is no better but no worse after today’s two-mile route march. I’ll give it a rest tomorrow and maybe try a 10min run on Saturday. On Sunday I’ll run 13 miles for the first time since mid-December’s 50k ultra. It’s been a while.
