It's True!

by Russell Turner - 17:04 on 15 March 2022

An anxious wait ended this afternoon when an email landed confirming that I do indeed have a place in the 2022 London Marathon on October 2 – which also happens to be Matchgirl’s birthday. And, as she’s chosen to rearrange her work life, she can celebrate it with me.

The only down side is that she now has to work on Yorkshire Marathon weekend, although that might be a blessing as it means she won’t have to witness her significant other dragging himself across a second marathon finish line in three weeks. It probably won’t be a pretty sight.

That’s if I make it there and that both events go ahead: Russian invasion or Covid upsurge could cast a damper; random illness can never be discounted, nor a new training injury, assuming that my hurty heel is just a memory by then. Rehabilitation continues two steps forward, one step back (today I’ve chosen to not even take a walk) but the direction is still forward. I’ll try to be patient.

Other recent inbox arrivals have included several “Were you unlucky in the ballot? Then why not run our marathon instead”-type emails, plus the latest Abba newsletter with a link to tickets. A quick click revealed availability on marathon weekend with seats starting at – gulp – £85 each. I suspect I’ll still be tempted.

I’ve already added the Runner’s World sub-4:30 training plan into my calendar (I’m an optimist), using Monday as long run day; City Limits has a full calendar too.

The excitement is building. Only 29 weeks to go.
