Back On The Road

by Russell Turner - 14:19 on 04 July 2021

My five days of not running seems to have worked. I returned to the roads today, to test my testy tendon over 10k, and all is well. It was a little stiff during the first two miles (well, more stiff than the rest of me) but loosened up after that. At the finish there was no sign of the previous ache so, with luck, this means I gave it sufficient recovery time. Let’s hope it still feels good in the morning.

This time next week I’ll have returned to real races and completed the Leamington HM (all being well). The digital handbook arrived two days ago and my race number should land on the doormat tomorrow. Just two or three easy leg-loosening runs, ranging from 10 to 40mins, remain to be done before The Big Day, which begins at 8.30am, or thereabouts. I’ll discover my wave and start time when the number arrives.

The after-race curry will occupy the afternoon, and, assuming they push aside Denmark on Wednesday, the day could climax with England, the Euros and a beer or two with my host, Richard. It might me a good day to be back in my home country. I’d have preferred Scotland to win but some things are too much to hope for.

Also too much to hope for is the bonus arising out of today’s 10k. Lucozade is giving away London Marathon places to five members of its Strava running club who complete the distance today. I’m not a Strava follower but have a profile for such events.

Fewer than 1,000 people have entered so the odds are much better than in the regular ballot. Hopefully the organisers will overlook the fact that when I uploaded my 6.2 miles to the site it calculated it as 9.94km.
