Ouch

Christmas could have been better. On the Festive Eve I strained a muscle in my back (a non-running-related event) and aggravated it next day so much that I spent part of the afternoon in bed, leaving me in no state, neither physical nor mental, to prepare the traditional Yuletide lasagne. Matchgirl was sympathetic and took a Christmas Dinner of leftover minestrone soup (homemade, at least) in her stride. Chocolates and Pringles helped.

By Boxing Day I’d recovered enough to resume kitchen duties, producing both a lasagne and a bonus chocolate loaf (a bit on the dry side, I confess), but movement was still cautious, especially when settling into or rising from my chair. Outside, wind-assisted rain strafed The Rural Retreat so heavily that even if I’d been fit I’d not have attempted a run.

Today, the back is much improved, although the occasional twinge prompts continued caution. With luck I’ll be able to get out tomorrow for a careful easy run. My thoughts of a Hogmanay PB attempt at 5k or 10k, as a last hurrah for 2020, now look unrealistic so unless I make a miraculous comeback I’ll carry on steady through January until Edinburgh Marathon training begins in February.

By then I’ll also have discovered whether I’ve been lucky in the ballot for October’s London Marathon. Four in a row? You never know.

Take it easy for as long as necessary, you need to be careful at your age.
Hugs to both of you, keep safe xxxx
