Sunshine And Sloth

by Russell Turner - 17:23 on 22 April 2019

Exactly one year ago I ran in the hottest London Marathon there’s been. Today, the temperature was just as hot, even in the Highlands. The Rural Retreat is filled with lethargic cats, although Willow did find time for a short vole hunt.

Fortunately I’d no training run scheduled for today in 22ºC heat; tomorrow, when I’ve an easy 30mins to do, the forecast is for 13º at 10am. The latest for London on Sunday is 10-13º between 10am and 4pm, which should make a comfortable running day. We’ll see.

So today’s found me lazing around like a proper marathon athlete (all they do apart from train is eat, relax and sleep) rather than begin the job of making the Retreat a fit place for cat-sitters Soo and Tony. There’s still tomorrow for the big tidy-up, ahead of our stately two-day progress to London which begins on Wednesday. I’m looking after my legs.

Just yards from the finish line last year.

As a nostalgic nod to last year, the shoes in which I ran (and walked) 26.2 miles have been brought out of retirement: not for running, because the cushioning is no longer up to the job, but as comfy travelling footwear. I’m looking after my feet too.
