The Number Of The Beast

by Russell Turner - 19:16 on 30 September 2018

The number to look out for when I’m panting around t’ Yorkshire Marathon course is 265. My vest number, complete with tracking tag, arrived in the post yesterday along with a race day magazine filled with useful information and tips on how to complete the 26.2 miles in one piece. Just two weeks to go.

Sadly, injured Matchgirl’s number and magazine arrived too, even though she’d officially withdrawn from the race. Much chuntering ensued. The good news is that her recovery continues apace. She will run again (some day).

In the meantime she’s become even more of a gym bunny, something I’ve steadfastly avoided despite repeated advice that strength and conditioning work would be good for me. Maybe I’ll begin after the marathon when I have a few weeks off from running.

My third taper run should have taken place today but after last night’s City Limits gig – the last before the marathon – I decided it was wise to delay the effort until tomorrow when I’ve more energy. This meant I was able to laze in front of the TV and watch the racing snakes run the Glasgow half marathon in barely more than an hour. Show-offs.

Earlier, I’d caught up with Strictly as I’d had to leave The Rural Retreat before it was on. I’m still undecided who to support this year but Danny, Seann and Kate are the front runners.
