A Demanding Cat

by Russell Turner - 15:56 on 27 September 2018

Black cats are bullies. Not content with pushing poor Pandora around, Maia has now turned on me. For the last few nights she’s demanded loudly and insistently that I should go to bed at the same time as Matchgirl, even if there’s something I’d rather watch on TV or a book I’d like to finish.

As there’s no peace until I do what I’m told, I climb the stairs preceded by a happy cat who then settles down on the landing, rather than the bed, where she doesn’t have to share with humankind. There’s no accounting for cats.

More sleep would not be a bad thing, considering all the energy I’ll need to complete t’ Yorkshire Marathon, now barely two weeks away, but it seems it’s not to be – waking around 2.30am appears to be the new norm. Fortunately I usually drop off again fairly quickly.

On Tuesday, Adam the Physio’s magic fingers helped soothe my niggle (which was already calming of its own accord) and yesterday I was able to complete the first run of the three-week taper: 40 minutes, into which I inserted two 1min walks, just to be on the safe side. All seemed well afterwards.

The next, tomorrow, is a more pacy 50-minute stint, followed by 90 minutes on Sunday; the days of the long long runs are over until t’ real one on October 14. The BBC’s long-range weather forecast doesn’t quite reach that date but if it matches the “light cloud and a moderate breeze” predicted for earlier in the week I’ll be content. Although a light breeze would be even better. We’ll see.
