The Riddle Of The Wrens

by Russell Turner - 19:48 on 21 January 2018

A puzzle was solved today, but the solution gave rise to another mystery.

Willow was blamed for the appearance of (briefly) live wrens inside The Rural Retreat. Now we know that the fault was not hers at all, thanks to Matchgirl spotting one that emerged from behind the radiator behind the sofa. Closer examination suggests that the avian intruder came through a small gap associated with the pipework. The scuffling that’s so intrigued The Pride recently (some of it, anyway) was caused by birds, not rodents.

Why the wrens made a home inside our wall is obvious: the warm glow of our central heating. How they got there is another matter. Hopefully they can still find their way out the same way they got in and not have to run the gauntlet of blood-crazed cats.

Their nest could be between our ground and first floors. Willow has spent a great deal of time crouching in the bathroom, listening intently, so there’s certainly something of interest beneath the floorboards.
