Four Wheels On My Wagon

by Russell Turner - 15:42 on 27 May 2017

It may have been my imagination but the chip on GOS’s screen seemed a little bigger yesterday so at 9.30 this morning I phoned the good people at Quote Me Happy, as per the instructions in their policy document, to organise a repair.

A few moments after talking to their friendly representative I was transferred to an equally helpful rep at Autoglass who, after confirming that the chip was within their repair parameters, set a date for their young man to visit on Wednesday.

Half an hour later another Autoglass rep called to say their young man was in the area today. Would I be home at midday? I would, and at 1pm the Autoglass van pulled up next to GOS. Its driver examined the damage, said there’d be no problem (although his disclaimer that the work might cause a proper crack was a worry) and left thirty minutes later with £10 to cover the policy excess.

Job done, and barely a mark left on the screen. Impressive service.

This compensated in a small way for the discovery, when I was preparing GOS’s cargo area for tonight’s trip to Skye, that there’s no spare wheel in the car. This wasn’t an Arnold Clark oversight – instead of a spare there’s a canister of gunk and an electric pump to squirt it inside a punctured tyre. Never assume.

It’s a long time since I’ve needed to change a wheel, but knowing I’ve not got one leaves me feeling a little vulnerable – which is daft because there’s no spare on Kawasaki San either. Looks like henceforth I’ll be living dangerously.
