No More Excuses

by Russell Turner - 18:58 on 24 May 2017

The Mammoth Garden Mowathon began today after an hour spent wrestling with the lawnmower’s new handle, rusty fittings and some thread-stripped bolts. How long the bodge job will last remains to be seen but after four hours of mowing, strimming and countless trips back and forth to an impressive grass mountain more than half the work was done. The remainder will be razed on Friday, because I refuse to waste another good biking day. Following that, the weed-choked flower beds will be addressed, probably with a strimmer – who knew buttercups could grow so high?

One thing the mowing made plain was the number of molehills that dot our sward. This doesn’t bother me too much (apart from all the stones brought to the surface) because we’ll never have a billiard table lawn and I'm happy to share it with all wildlife.

Cats may think differently, or maybe they were disgruntled after a morning indoors, hiding from the noise outside. After a short stroll at lunchtime I left them to their own devices while I ate, then stepped outside to discover an expired mole on the lawn that definitely hadn’t been there earlier. The Pride was saying nothing.

It was still there when I finished for the day but not long after that, when I took out seed to apologise to birds also disgruntled by the racket, the corpse was no longer there. The huge crow that strutted around the garden earlier may have been involved.

No snaps were snapped today, so here’s one taken yesterday of our most photogenic moggy.
