Festive Frights For Felines

by Russell Turner - 22:32 on 25 December 2016

The human inhabitants of The Rural Retreat enjoyed their Christmas Day but it’s been less fun for cats.

First to suffer a festive fright was Pandora, who left the cottage after breakfast and had still not returned more than an hour after lunch. Two separate searches found no sign of the wanderer, and, as Storm Conor increased in intensity and volume, both Matchgirl and I began to worry.

The mystery was solved when a neighbour returned her, wrapped in a blanket which almost kept her claws out of the good Samaritan’s arm, after she’d been discovered cowering in a corner of their house which was filling up with Yuletide visitors. That probably explained how the inquisitive puss had found her way inside.

It took a few hours for the traumatised tabby to return to normal. Food, petting and some quiet time alone in the bedroom all contributed to the healing process.

The next festive fright befell a dozing Willow, whose dreams were so dramatic that she fell off the shelf above the radiator, then spent the next half-hour staring suspiciously at the place she’d landed, leaving and returning several times, unconvinced that her imaginary protagonist was not lurking in the shadows.

Maia had no frights, but two out-of-sorts moggies were enough to leave her restless too. Cats are sensitive souls.

Cats featured heavily in my seasonal gifts to Matchgirl, which included the annual My Sad Cat calendar and a poster of its hero. Hers to me included a personalised jar of Marmite. Who needs to spend heaps of money to find the perfect present?
