The Crunching In The Night

by admin - 11:57 on 28 August 2014

Local farmers took advantage of the recent spell of fine weather to begin harvesting the Black Isle's abundant barley fields on Tuesday, including the one beside The Rural Retreat. Operations continued well into the evening, thanks to combine harvesters equipped with powerful headlights. These didn't disturb us, but a consequence of the work did.

Hundreds of homeless mice now roam the countryside, a fair proportion seeking shelter in and around our garden. This, you might think, would be a bonanza for The Fearless Ones but it's Maia who's proved most excited by the displacement.

The first night after the harvest at least four yowls of triumph were heard when The Great Black Hunter returned to her lair. Crunching noises also featured. In the morning, whole and dismembered corpses had to be collected, something repeated to a lesser extent last night. It's fortunate that Willow and Pandora seem uninterested in midnight mouse mauling.

How long Maia's homicidal streak continues remains to be seen but chances are that it won't be long until she resumes her celebrated impression of Bagpuss.

The good weather's also left me with no excuse not to employ the lawnmower on the Retreat's broad acres so recent snappery's been limited to fruitless butterfly hunting. All I have to offer is a worm's-eye view of neighbouring fungus. Toadstools? Mushrooms? You tell me.

Fungus

I think it could be The Blusher (Amanita rubescens.) A member of the Amanita family. Which makes it a mushroom.
It is difficult to tell because a lot of mushrooms look alike. You have not said how big the cap is or what the underside of the cap is like. However as I say my guess is The Blusher thats the closest I can guess looking in my book.
