Close But No Cigar (Again)

by admin - 17:39 on 24 April 2014

My literary output has several times in the past featured in the runner-up spot, so when Black Isle Writers revealed the winner of the annual writing competition yesterday I was hopeful but not over-confident.

I was right to be. Redemption Song, a finely crafted short story on the given theme of redemption, took the silver medal, although the judge did say he was torn between my feel good tale and a more gritty story of genocide in Rwanda. It takes all sorts.

Read it here and tell me what you think. You'll find even more tales on the Short Stories page.

My lack of recognition didn't stop me from making progress on putting together the Writers' 25th anniversary anthology, to be titled Quicksilver. I even designed a cover which received unanimous praise from the anthology committee, although it's still a work in progress.

Shame it didn't choose the winning story too. Not that I'm sulking.

Juice Update: The five-day detox is over, I've lost five pounds and yesterday I faced a pub lunch at the Station Hotel in Avoch where the Writers' AGM was taking place. Surprisingly, I didn't stuff myself and had no appetite for the free bowls of chips the management scattered around the tables. My future appears to be healthy. As does Matchgirl's.

Bike Update: Kawasaki San is still living at the ZZ Top workshop, it management as yet having failed to receive the new discs they ordered. And the sun still shines. Typical.

I read and enjoyed the story, pity it didn't win.
