Busy In The Garden

by admin - 15:46 on 01 April 2014

An unprecedented spell (this year) of good weather has allowed me to take great strides forward in smartening up the garden. Bonfires have blazed. Mowers have whirred.

Also busy in the garden is The Pride, terrorising small birds, stalking pheasants, and – in Willow's case – attempting to single-pawedly wipe out The Rural Retreat's entire shrew population. Thankfully, the cats take little persuasion to join Matchgirl and me in a walk up the lane where a plethora of springtime scents gives them something else to think about, for a short while at least.

Some creatures have a better survival rate than others. Yesterday Matchgirl stepped into the kitchen to find one reptile surrounded by all three members of The Pride, none willing to administer a killing blow. We've yet to find an ex-lizard, although a few have shed their tails. This one survived unscathed and was released back into the wild by Matchgirl.

Measures can be taken to protect wildlife, as this Amazon review illustrates, although the number of birds that kill themselves laughing isn't made clear.

Now April's here I'm hoping we're only weeks away from the first daylight marten sightings, Mystery Moggies permitting. Free food continues to be taken and visitors snapped by Bushnell after dark, including these roe deer.
