Hope For The Best, Prepare For The Worst

by admin - 21:17 on 12 February 2014

Floods, gales, blizzards – unlike the rest of the UK, this year The Rural Retreat has suffered none of the above. Yet. But the weather's getting colder and our trip to the sunny Mediterranean next week can't come soon enough.

So Matchgirl's perusal today of Malta's long-range forecast cast a bit of gloom on our hopes of a few days in shirtsleeves and sunglasses. Days of sun and temperatures up to twenty degrees are predicted to end on the day we arrive, to be replaced by rain and ten degrees and lasting at least until the day of her race. Oh dear.

Undaunted, Half Marathon Matchgirl searched until she found a more optimistic forecast. With luck, that will turn out to be correct. However, to be safe, Matchgirl's increased our luggage allowance so she can take a wider selection of clothing with her and be prepared for anything from heatwave to ice storm.

Of course, we've got to get there first. The Weather Gods could disrupt air travel or prevent cat-sitters Soo and Tony from reaching the Highlands; today, the A9 and A82 were both closed by snow-related accidents.

Fortunately, I do have one piece of good news to report: Polywatch did the trick and polished out the scuffed surface of the Pentax's now pristine viewfinder. Which means that however dismal the weather becomes, I'll at least be able to see it properly.
