Squealing In The Night

by admin - 17:27 on 06 October 2013

Those waiting for good news of Houdini the Vole will be disappointed. Shortly after I settled down to sleep, two nights ago, much squealing filled The Rural Retreat, indicating that the unfortunate rodent had been captured for a third time.

After a short chase it was rescued yet again, then held securely inside The Rescue Cup until I could take it outside to be set free away from prying feline eyes. But the stress must have been too much for a small heart – when I tipped him onto the grass, I discovered that Houdini had gone to vole heaven.

Pandora clearly enjoyed her late-night hunt. Last night, just after I'd settled down to sleep (can you see a pattern emerging?) a familiar commotion destroyed the Retreat's peace. This time Pandora exited through the cat-flap as soon as she heard me coming; I returned to bed.

If the same happens tonight I will not be a happy cat-carer.

Life was quieter today. The return of fine weather left me no excuse not to bring out our increasingly battered mower from premature hibernation and trim a surprisingly shaggy lawn. There was also a stroll with Maia and The Tabby Terror and the opportunity to take my first dragonfly snaps – Willow wasn't around to do her usual photo bombing.

Common Hawker 2

Internet research leads me to believe that this is a Common Hawker. If you know differently, let me know.

Wow, I had no idea that dragonflies were so beautifully patterned.
