The Gentle Touch

by admin - 20:24 on 20 September 2013

The Pride must sense that a hard winter's on the way. All three of its members were out and about today, making the most of a mild autumn day to hone their hunting skills. Fortunately, all are sometimes unable to deliver the coup de grace so several rescues were made.

Even Maia, The Plodding Puss, brought down some small game, but one of her victims was a shock to us – and to her, if the sheepish cry of triumph she uttered when entering The Rural Retreat is anything to go by.

At first, I couldn't distinguish the small black mound she'd dropped at her feet and feared a half-chewed half rodent. Closer inspection revealed the closed wings of a butterfly. Even more amazing was that it appeared dazed but undamaged.

Peacock

A Peacock I captured earlier this month.

I scooped up the creature in the cup we keep handy for such eventualities, took it outside, turned the cup upside down and watched a relieved Peacock butterfly flutter away. Maia's mouth must have the gentle touch of a brain surgeon's fingers. How our heavyweight feline made the capture is a mystery.

That the creature survived is further proof of a theory I've held for some time now: The Fearless Ones are big cats in small bodies; Maia is a very small cat in a much larger body.
