Ready For Katia

by admin - 23:13 on 11 September 2011

The larder is fully stocked, sandbags have been placed around The Rural Retreat's door and emergency wellies and candles are close at hand – my preparations to deal with the swathe of destruction that Hurricame Katia will wreak across Scotland are complete.

Matchgirl, who fled to Shetland today, has already texted a plea to pile Bess's dish high when I leave for GNoME HQ tomorrow, just in case I'm unable to return. I expect more advice at any minute.

Bess is making her own preparations. I presume that's why she was hunting again today – to stockpile fresh meat in case I can't reach a tin-opener. The meat she showed off in the garden this afternoon was so fresh that it still moved, so I rescued the vole from her and set it free in the bushes. Our moggy, who I'm increasingly convinced needs specs, made a baffled search for her prey in the area where I picked it up but soon lost interest and returned to her sofa.

Her sight is equally short indoors. When I went upstairs last night I left two mice running around the living room. The small game hunter was oblivious. There's been no sign of them today, dead or alive, so the rampaging rodents have either returned to the wild or gone to tell all their friends about the place they've found in which to take shelter from the forthcoming gales.
