A Blast From The Past

by admin - 16:33 on 22 January 2014

The BBC's Winterwatch team obviously has lots of spare time when its members are waiting for the next shy specimen of wildlife to get ready for its close-up.

Today I received a Flickr message asking if I'd mind one of my snaps being used in the online programme scheduled for 1pm and 4pm this Friday to Sunday, hosted by Iolo Williams, to coincide with The Big Garden Birdwatch. Of course I don't mind.

But which masterpiece of avian portraiture had caught their eye? Was it this month's long-tailed tits, or maybe the redpolls, or even a crested tit from this time last year?

None of the above. When I clicked on the link they sent it was to discover the melanistic great tit I'd spied in January 2011. A lowly researcher must have trawled through thousands of people's snaps to find that.

Black Great Tit 4

As its use on the programme and site is not guaranteed, here's the snap in question, which I guess may be used to illustrate a segment on birds with freaky colouring. Tell me if you see it there – I may have better things to do than stay online to find out if my name flashes on the screen for two seconds.
