On Your Marks...

by admin - 15:25 on 20 April 2013

Less than twelve hours before Marathon Matchgirl begins her Big Day (it's a 5am start) and some important decisions have still not been made. Which newly purchased running bottoms should she wear (and do they make her bum look big)? And what newly purchased high-tech underwear? And where on her running vest should she pin her official number?

At least her newly purchased bat-belt is sorted and stocked with energy gels and jelly beans and a place found in it for her mobile phone, just in case. Sadly, her newly purchased (but secondhand) Lumix compact camera will have to stay behind after she accepted, grudgingly, that it's too bulky in her bat-belt and might become a nuisance if held in her hand for twenty-six miles.

This morning, following an unimpressive breakfast at the Novotel (cold baked beans, anyone?) I accompanied Matchgirl and a gaggle of other runners and hangers-on on a tour of the last two miles of the course and the finish line on The Mall. Lots of good advice was offered to runners and spectators, some of which I heard when traffic wasn't thundering past.

Last night, Singin' In The Rain was so good that Matchgirl purchased a souvenir umbrella. The show's great, but take a mac if you sit in the front two rows – the action gets very splashy.
