Almost Time For The Walking Stick

You can stop worrying – the silence which followed news that Bess was returning to Dr Death's clinic is not a portent of doom. The perky puss has been healthier than me and my 48-hour virus, whatever it was. I'm just about recovered, since you ask.

Dr Vet is almost certain that the patient's wobbly leg is a symptom of arthritis: a condition forecast at the time of Bess's treatment following, and recovery from, her Near-Death Experience almost three years ago.

This might explain her disinclination to go on the long walks she used to enjoy, although the speed at which she moved when I surprised her in the lane this afternoon suggests that she's not yet a crumbly old pensioner. Windowsills, both in and out of The Rural Retreat, remain favourite vantage points.

Acupuncture has been suggested as a way of keeping Bess on the move. I imagine that would be very successful.

Literary Loss: The death was announced today of one of my heroines – author and screenwriter Nora Ephron, who penned one of my favourite films, When Harry Met Sally. Amazingly, comments on the BBC website report included some of the “Who?” and “Who cares?” variety. Sometimes I despair.
