Flaming May

by admin - 18:00 on 02 May 2011

Matchgirl and I are home after three sun-soaked days in the west of Scotland. That's not something you can often boast.

Great weather, great roads and far too much food – the perfect bike club weekend.

Highlight of the weekend was the flames produced when one participant attempted to revive his ailing BMW. Not only was this on the edge of Glengarry filling station, but his DIY took place in front of a stack of Calor Gas canisters. Thankfully, we all survived. The bike was even back on the road a few hours later.

The Pentax went with us but, as I've mentioned before, a motorbike and a DSLR make a poor combination, especially when my interest in landscape snappery has waned a little. That's why the only snap to survive the weekend is of a starling seen at Arisaig.

Starling

Another weekend highlight was a text to alert me to the appearance of snaps from The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery in the Scottish Daily Mail. I've yet to see the paper, as have Marten James and Andrew, but I fear disappointment is in store. The text told readers about a "Black Isle Calendar", and the lack of a corresponding leap in website hits suggests my site address was not included in the story.

If a reporter had spoken to us it might have helped. The Bumper Book's cursed life continues.

There was action in The Rural Retreat in our absence. Cat-sitters Soo and Tony saw late-night marten activity and twice rescued lizards from Bess's clutches – something I had to do on the day of our departure.

Either the Clan Prescott has moved from the safety of the post at the bottom of the drive (none have been seen there this year) or another family of common lizards has taken residence in the garden.

Why Bess has turned her attention from bird-watching and mouse-mauling to lizard-bothering is a mystery. I hope she won't be too successful in her hunts.
