Meaty Treats For Martens

by admin - 23:44 on 07 January 2011

Last night's sub-zero temperatures left Master Marten hungry – in The Rural Retreat's garden at least. This morning's examination of his dining area revealed most of his Nutella frozen to the gate, his egg solid inside its shell, and lots of pawprints in the snow.. At least he'd had nuts and raisins to keep him going.

Dolphin James's camera club presentation left me feeling rather guilty, for he feeds his models on Co-op chicken (a tad thoughtless when their species' alleged fondness for raiding henhouses is considered). So tonight I thought I'd treat my favourite mustelid to something meaty, but rather than chicken he has a choice of corned beef and pork luncheon meat.

At the time of writing he's still not appeared to make his preference known, and even when he does it will be a while before I can get another snap, so today's portrait star is one of DJ's secret martens, captured by me during the summer and kept under wraps (mostly) until now, when it's safe to show him to the world.

And below is another of yesterday's crested tits – not quite as sharp as the previous ones but with such a good pose I didn't have the heart to delete him.

I gave my 'new marten' chicken and eggs last night. Just heading off to see if s/he enjoyed it.
