Leaping Lizards

by admin - 23:46 on 29 July 2010

Yesterday we learned that two common lizards frequented the gatepost at the bottom of The Rural Retreat's drive. Today a third was seen – it looks like we have a small colony.

Their ages and gender are a mystery, for my knowledge of reptiles is small, so if any lizard-lovers can enlighten me, please do.

Two could be seen sunning themselves when I left the Retreat's grounds this afternoon, although one leapt into the privacy of the rosebay willowherb when the Pentax was pointed. I assumed this was the one that a few moments later peered from the hole in the post, but when I returned thirty minutes later I discovered three of the creatures entwined together.

Whether this was an erotic moment, or just good friends hanging out, I couldn't say.

Just as big a mystery is: Which one is Prescott?

No martens were seen tonight, so the snap below is of Master Marten who came by yesterday. We did have one welcome guest, though – Mr Hedgehog.

Night had fallen when Bess alerted Matchgirl that someone was outside. She pointed a torch at the gate, expecting to find a marten tucking into Nutella; instead she discovered a hedgehog tucking into an egg. He bumbled away when he'd had his fill.

A marten came by later, we deduced from the sudden disappearance of nuts and Nutella. What he made of the empty eggshell is another mystery.
